76th read: The Six Deaths of the Saint (Into Shadow #3)

Into Shadow is a collection of unrelated stories by different authors, so it can be read in any order.

I began reading this collection for the story written by Lev Grossman (Into Shadow #2) but that one unfortunately landed on my flops for April. I’m really glad I kept going after that, because I wouldn’t have found this one.

I’ve decided I love Alix E. Harrow (although I’ve only read 2 of her stories, both this month)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Saint of War spares the life of a servant girl so she can fulfill her destiny as the kingdom’s greatest warrior in this short story of love and loyalty by New York Times bestselling author Alix E. Harrow.

Always mindful of the debt she owes, the girl finds her worth as a weapon in the hand of the Prince. Her victories make him a king, then an emperor. The bards sing her name and her enemies fear it. But the war never ends and the cost keeps rising—how many times will she repeat her own story?

REVIEW

This story was exquisite & prompted me to research the author more, to read her author books. I’m struggling to believe it was only 30 pages, although I can look back and see.

I felt a lot of rage, reading this story. It was good rage. The kind that fuels well-deserved vengeance. I was a huge fan of the main character. Both her romances were interesting.

Really really loved the repetition/loop, like a drum beat in my mind.

It might make it to my top favourite short stories discovered in 2023.
