REVIEW

The spaceship being pregnant made me giddy with wonder. I loved Third Fish in the first book & I was so excited to see her again.

I kept feeling bad for Binti and wishing she could catch a break (but that wouldn’t make a very interesting story, would it?) I love her friendship with Okwu, but it’s not always the most empathetic. (Side note: using it to describe Okwu makes me uncomfortable since it objectifies & depersonnalizes. I wish it had different pronouns.)

I loved Okwu swimming through the lake with luminescent snails.

I loved the Enyi Zinariya (who Binti called Desert People). I wish it was easier for her to shed her prejudices against them, but this is happening at an overwhelming time. It’s hard to remain grounded, when there’s multiple ropes pulling you in different directions and your identity keeps growing.

I loved Mwinyi. It was nice to see him challenging Binti while helping her get better. I hope we see more of him in the third book.

Highlight: I was a Himba, a master harmonizer. Then I was also Meduse, anger vibrating in my okuoko. Now I was also Enyi Zinariya, of the Desert People gifted with alien technology. I was worlds. What was home? Where was home? Was home on fire?
