14th read: Silver in the Wood

This is part of a duology. I’ve been interested in that structure for a while, so I’ll read the second one soon.

SYNOPSIS

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

REVIEW

I didn’t love this book right away, but it grew on me. It went a couple ways I did not expect.

I enjoyed Tobias’ relationship with the forest. The oak tree behind the cottage reminded me of the tall pine tree behind my house as a child. I loved it. One scene involving the tree made me quiet upset.

I was apprehensive to meet Silver’s mother, but I loved all her scenes.

One character (Bramble the dryad) shares a name with my bird. She was probably my favourite. I love how she compares Tobias and Silver in her mind.
